About Thales Group

At its core, Thales Group is a global technology leader building critical systems for the aerospace, defense, and digital security markets. If you've ever used a credit card, flown on a plane, or seen a modern naval vessel, you've likely encountered their technology without even knowing it. The company provides the complex electronics, software, and data security that underpins much of modern life and national sovereignty. Thales's story is one of industrial evolution rather than a simple startup tale. Its roots trace back to 1893 with the founding of Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston. The company as we know it began to take shape much later. The pivotal moment came in 1968 when the electronics arms of Thomson-Brandt and Compagnie Générale de Télégraphie Sans Fil (CSF) merged to create Thomson-CSF. This wasn't the brainchild of a few founders in a garage, but a strategic fusion of French industrial and defense electronics capabilities. For decades, Thomson-CSF operated as a major, state-influenced defense contractor. A defining shift occurred in December 2000, when, after acquiring the British defense firm Racal Electronics, the company rebranded itself as Thales Group. This move signaled a new global ambition beyond its French origins. The 21st century has been marked by strategic acquisitions to build its technological prowess. Key milestones include the purchase of Alcatel's space and rail signaling divisions in 2006, digital security firm Gemalto in 2017, and, more recently, cybersecurity company Imperva. Today, Thales stands as a powerhouse in defense electronics, a key player in aerospace, and a growing force in cybersecurity. Partially owned by the French state and Dassault Aviation, the company continues to invest heavily in "deep tech" like AI and quantum computing, positioning itself to tackle the complex security and connectivity challenges of tomorrow.
