Try Dealroom →, a Caerphilly-based provider of managed workforce solutions, has completed a second management buy-out led by chief executive Phil Tromans. What does ALS do? The company provides fully managed workforce solutions across the UK, combining recruitment with on-site operational management, supply chain oversight, and compliance governance. It serves clients with high-volume temporary labour needs in the recycling, warehousing, distribution, and manufacturing sectors.
By the numbers: ALS has grown from £13.3 million to more than £60 million in turnover and doubled its headcount since its first management buy-out in September 2018. That earlier deal, backed by a £1 million package, let Steve Lanigan and Gavin Payne buy out the founding shareholders.
Why now? The buy-out hands ownership to Tromans and his team as the business enters its next growth phase. Recruitment industry veteran Phil McDonald joins as chair to strengthen governance and strategy.
What's the endgame? Tromans said the investment gives ALS "the platform to scale what we already do well," letting it deepen client relationships and win new customers seeking "a more structured, accountable approach to labour provision."
The Development Bank of Wales has now supported ALS through multiple ownership stages, having taken an equity stake in 2018 that ALS bought back in March 2021. The signal: The transaction shows how regional public-backed funders are financing full ownership cycles for established businesses. As Deputy Fund Manager Jo Thomas put it, it reflects support "through the full cycle of ownership, from succession and MBOs to long-term growth and reinvestment."
