Active Label raises €2 million seed to scale smart temperature labels

What's the endgame? The company develops smart labels that monitor the thermal history of temperature-sensitive products as they move through supply chains. It targets food distribution and the regulated pharmaceutical sector.
The labels combine powdered silicate and fluorohalide materials with optical reading systems. Under ultraviolet light, the materials emit light at a rate that changes with temperature, which the company says can reveal whether a product stayed within its optimal storage range.
What will the money do? Active Label said the funds will strengthen industrial production capacity and research and development. The company described the round as a move from technology validation toward industrial and commercial consolidation. No timetable or targets were disclosed.
The labels cost around €0.01 and can be read by smartphone, according to the company. Active Label says the technology can support decisions on quality, freshness, logistics, and waste reduction, and may allow a product's expiry date to be recalculated — company-described capabilities, not independently verified results.
Why now? The startup spun out of the University of CagliariDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in 2023, building on research by Professors Carlo Maria Carbonaro, Daniele Chiriu, and Pier Carlo Ricci at the Department of Physics. Eureka! Venture had already backed it with a €210,000 proof-of-concept investment in December 2021 and an €850,000 pre-seed round in February 2024.
Chief executive officer Pier Carlo Ricci called the round "a strategic milestone," saying it would strengthen the industrial base and prepare for "a more structured period of growth."
Massimo Gentili, a partner at Eureka! FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and an Active Label board member, said the startup had brought to market results from more than 10 years of scientific research into advanced semiconductor materials.
The signal: At over €2 million, the round sits in the 93rd percentile of all-time seed deals for Italian food startups, based on a sample of 298. That places a university spin-off among the larger early-stage bets in a sector where most seed cheques are far smaller.
