Muangthai Capital raises $260M to expand lending to rural women-owned firms

What's the deal? Thai non-bank lender Muangthai Capital (MTC)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised $260 million in post-IPO debt to widen credit access for underserved women-owned businesses. The package combines a $200 million syndicated facility co-led by the Asian Development BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking CorporationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → with a $60 million parallel loan from FinDev CanadaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Canada's bilateral development finance institution.

Why now? Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) contribute roughly 35% of Thailand's GDP but struggle to access formal credit, often lacking credit history or collateral. That gap pushes many toward informal lending, which limits their growth.

What's the endgame? FinDev Canada will direct 100% of its loan toward expanding formal financial services for rural women-owned MSMEs. MTC, regulated by the Bank of Thailand, has 90% of its customers in rural areas, positioning it to deliver that credit through its existing branch network.

The deal marks FinDev Canada's first direct loan to a Thai non-bank financial institution. The syndicate also includes commercial and state-owned banks and an asset management firm.

What they're saying: "An investment in women is an investment in us all," said Randeep Sarai, Canada's secretary of state for international development. MTC chief executive officer Parithad Patcharachai said the partnership would strengthen the lender's "ability to serve underserved customers nationwide."

The signal: At $260 million, this ranks among the larger development-finance deals in the region, reflecting rising efforts to pull private capital into emerging markets through gender-focused lending. For Canada, it also deepens ties with Thailand, its second-largest trading partner within ASEAN.
