CRDB Bank secures $75M FMO debt facility to expand SMME lending
What's the deal? Tanzania-based CRDB Bank has signed a $75 million long-term financing facility with FMO, the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank. The roughly 10-year facility was signed on October 15 on the sidelines of the Africa Investor Forum.
What's the endgame? The debt strengthens CRDB's Tier II capital base, which the bank says supports its growth and resilience. That, in turn, expands its capacity to lend to small, medium and microenterprises (SMMEs).
Why now? CRDB framed SMMEs as the segment that underpins entrepreneurship, job creation, and inclusive economic development. The facility channels development finance toward a part of the market often underserved by commercial lenders.
The signal: At $75 million, the facility sits in the lower tier of comparable deals by size. But as a long-dated capital injection from a development bank, it points to continued European DFI interest in funding African SME credit through local institutions.
