LanzaJet raises $20M to scale sustainable jet fuel production
What's the deal? LanzaJet, a sustainable fuels technology company and producer, has secured fully committed new financing of at least $20 million to fund the next phase of growth at its Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Soperton, Georgia. The first close happened on October 14, with the round expected to close in full by December 2026.
Who's backing it? The financing is supported by LanzaTech Global (NASDAQ: LNZA), Vinod Khosla, and the LanzaJet Board. It forms part of a broader recapitalisation and deleveraging led by the company's shareholders and existing investors.
Why now? As part of the transactions, LanzaTech will significantly increase its ownership of LanzaJet, reinforcing its commitment to the company's commercial growth. Jennifer Holmgren, chief executive officer of LanzaTech, will continue as chair of the LanzaJet Board and serve as interim CEO.
What's the endgame? Freedom Pines Fuels is the world's first commercial-scale alcohol-to-jet facility, with capacity of 10 million gallons per year. It has already produced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel meeting ASTM specifications; the new capital will help it scale output and deliver SAF to global customers.
LanzaJet's patented technology converts ethanol from varied sources into SAF, from established supply in Brazil and the US to waste-carbon resources processed through LanzaTech's gas fermentation platform. That flexibility lets projects tap the most competitive feedstock in each market and qualify for mandated markets including the UK and European Union.
"LanzaTech has taken first-of-a-kind technology to profitable commercial operation," said Holmgren. "With a larger ownership stake and the Board's full support, we look forward to bringing Freedom Pines Fuels and future LanzaJet plants to the same commercial success."
The signal: LanzaJet's strategic backers span the aviation value chain — Airbus, American AirlinesDealroom has a profile for this one. The deeper tie to LanzaTech marks a shift from proving the technology to scaling it as demand for lower-carbon fuels grows.
