Fruga had been bootstrapped until now.
What's the endgame? Fruga's platform lets policyholders link a bank account, credit card, or debit card to their policy through open banking. When they spend with partners in travel, groceries, and high-street retail, they earn "insurance credits" applied as a renewal discount — often worth more than £150.
What does the money fund? Fruga plans to expand its workforce, with key hires expected in Q1 2027, and grow a client base that already includes a pipeline of household insurers and managing general agents. Why now? Insurers can embed the technology under their own branding, gaining customer data and year-round engagement rather than contact only at renewal or claim time. Founder and chief executive officer Ross McCarthy gave the example of a policyholder buying pet supplies — a signal that could prompt a pet insurance offer before the customer reaches a comparison site.
What could go wrong? The model depends on winning over insurers trained to compete on price and customers conditioned to shop around at every renewal. "Every renewal sends them back to the comparison sites, and the insurer that wins them this year loses them the next," McCarthy said.
The signal: Fruga is betting insurance can build an ongoing value layer much as consumer banks like Monzo and Revolut have. "Insurance is a huge market, but the relationship between providers and their customers has remained largely unchanged for years," said PXN Ventures senior investment associate Joe Ball — a gap this round aims to close.
