The deal brings MDS's entire 11-lawyer team — four partners, one founder and counsel, and six associates — to Miller Thomson in early November. Terms were not disclosed.
What's the endgame? The move expands Miller Thomson's national business law practice. It lifts the firm's corporate, M&A and securities group to roughly 130 lawyers across five provinces.
Why now? MDS advises entrepreneurs, private equity funds, family offices, and growth-oriented companies in Western Canada and on Canada-US cross-border transactions. Its practice spans mid-market M&A, debt and growth equity financing, and private equity fund formation.
"Our two teams share a business-minded, practical approach to advising entrepreneurs and private company investors," said Enzo Di Iorio, chair of Miller Thomson. "This acquisition bolsters our ability to support clients across Canada, and we see clear opportunities to grow together."
Ben Slager, MDS co-founder and chief executive officer, said the firm had been approached for acquisition many times. "We wanted a firm that combined national reach with a truly entrepreneurial and collaborative culture," he said.
The signal: The deal continues an aggressive growth push. Miller Thomson has recruited 38 lateral lawyers since January 2025, including 13 partners in its corporate, M&A and securities practice, while expanding its financial services, tax, real estate, and private client practices.
