OrbiMed raises $1.9B life sciences fund in $3B double close

What's the deal? OrbiMed, a global healthcare investment firm, has raised $3 billion across two new private equity funds. The larger of the two, OrbiMed Private Investments XDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, closed at more than $1.9 billion to back life sciences venture opportunities in the US and Europe.

The second fund, OrbiMed Asia Partners VIDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, raised over $1 billion for healthcare growth equity and venture capital across Asia. Both target biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics, and technology-enabled healthcare services.

Who's backing it? Investors include medical institutions, university endowments, foundations, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and family offices. "We are grateful for the continued support of our many long-standing investors," said Carter Neild, a managing partner of OrbiMed.

What's the endgame? Both funds aim to build healthcare companies from the ground up. The firm, which manages over $21 billion in assets, is led by 20 partners and more than 150 professionals across 12 locations, including New York, London, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Mumbai.

Why now? Managing partner Carl Gordon pointed to fresh momentum in the sector. "There has never been a more exciting time to invest in life sciences innovation," he said, citing AI, new therapeutic modalities, and "China's emergence as a biotechnology powerhouse."

The signal: The dual close — split between Western venture and Asian growth equity — reflects OrbiMed's bet that the next wave of healthcare breakthroughs will come from both established and emerging markets.
