Qatar's $3B fund-of-funds adds US energy-tech investor Activate Capital
What's the deal? The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) has added US-based Activate CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to its $3 billion Fund of Funds program. Activate is a growth-equity firm focused on energy technology and smart infrastructure.
What's the endgame? QIA's commitment will back Activate's investment strategy across the Global South, targeting sectors undergoing digitalization and decarbonization. The firm invests across the energy and power sectors, ground and space-based mobility, digital industry, supply chain resilience, and climate change adaptation.
The expansion: As part of the deal, Activate plans to open its first international office in Doha. The office will house senior investment staff, including a partner dedicated to the Qatari market, and the firm aims to recruit local and international talent.
Why now? QIA launched the Fund of Funds program in February 2024 to draw leading venture firms to Qatar and deepen ties with the global venture ecosystem. Activate is the latest manager to join, which QIA cited as a sign of sustained interest from international investors.
"We share QIA's view that technology-driven solutions would play a pivotal role in reshaping infrastructure systems globally," said Activate co-founder Anup Jacob, who will join the firm's Limited Partners Advisory Committee.
The signal: Activate's climate, energy, and industrial focus widens the program's sectoral reach and feeds Qatar's National Vision 2030. For QIA, each new manager builds the local startup pipeline while tapping global expertise — a sovereign wealth strategy that trades capital for knowledge transfer.
