ARM Institute wins $90M to automate 12 US military manufacturing sites

What's the deal? The ARM InstituteDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has been awarded nearly $90 million to fund 10 projects that will bring robotics and AI to 12 US military manufacturing sites. The funding comes from the Office of the Under Secretary of War Manufacturing Technology Office (OSW ManTech)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, through its Organic Industrial Base (OIB) Modernization Challenge.

Who's doing the work? Fifteen member organizations in the Pittsburgh-based consortium will deliver working solutions within two years. The ARMDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Institute leads a network of more than 500 members across industry, academia, and government.

What's the endgame? The OIB is a network of arsenals, depots, and ammunition plants that build and maintain US military equipment. The Department of WarDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → wants to modernize these facilities using robotics and physical AI, with projects spanning every branch of the military.

What the projects cover: Selected solutions range from improving safety in energetics production and raising manufacturing quality with AI, to speeding mission readiness with drones, to clearing bottlenecks through robotics.

Why the workforce matters: Each project includes a workforce readiness component led by the ARM Institute. The work will identify the skills workers need and, where necessary, upskill or recruit staff to run the new systems.

"Innovation cannot exist in a vacuum. A skilled workforce is needed to support these technologies," said Lisa Masciantonio, chief workforce officer at the ARM Institute.

The signal: The award ties robotics and physical AI directly to defence manufacturing and national security, a priority area for US industrial policy. It also signals that automation investment now comes paired with explicit plans to train the humans who work alongside the machines.
