Peppermint raises $4.7M to untangle clinical trial billing

What's the deal? PeppermintDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised $4.7 million in seed funding for its artificial intelligence-powered financial operations platform built for teams running clinical research. The round was led by Moxxie, the company said in an October 8 press release.

What's the endgame? The platform aims to give clinical research sites a continuous, audited record of every visit, invoice, and dollar they are owed. It pulls data from a site's trial management software, cross-references it against payment history and contracts, invoices continuously, and chases collections.

Why now? There is no standard system for clinical trial billing today, forcing sites to reconstruct what they are owed by hand from disconnected systems. The company says early users collect revenue three times faster, cut overdue invoices threefold, and reduce billing time by 20%.

Who's behind it? Co-founders David Freeman and VJ Thurimella met at X1, where they were the first business hire and first engineer. They helped build the financial infrastructure behind the consumer credit card business later acquired by Robinhood.

"At X1 and Robinhood, we helped build systems designed for precision and scale, to process billions of dollars every year," Freeman said. "We're bringing that architecture to clinical research."

What's next? Peppermint will use the funding to expand the platform into budget negotiation, expense management, and clinical trial analytics.

The signal: Investors are betting on applying modern financial technology to overlooked corners of healthcare. "Peppermint is bringing the discipline of modern FinTech to one of healthcare's least-examined back offices," said Alex Roetter, managing director and general partner at Moxxie.
