MDIA lands $3M Knight grant to take public-innovation model national
What's the deal? MDIA, the group behind the US's first Public Innovation Authority, has received a $3 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to expand its model to communities nationwide.
What does MDIA do? It helps local governments adopt emerging technology to deliver services more efficiently. Its core process, the Public Innovation Challenge, moves departments from diagnosing a problem to piloting solutions with startups and small businesses, then to procurement.
The track record: Since launching in Miami-Dade County in 2023, MDIA has run eight challenges spanning airport passenger experience, seaport cargo visibility, and emergency management. It says the model has cut the time from solicitation to pilot launch by up to 67% — from 18–24 months to as little as seven.
Why it matters: Its open challenges draw an average of more than 70 applications, roughly 17 times the response rate of a typical government request for proposals, which usually attracts five to 15.
What's the endgame? The grant marks MDIA's shift from a single-market organisation into the parent brand for a national network, with Miami-Dade Innovation AuthorityDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → remaining the flagship. A founding cohort will include Akron, Ohio; Macon, Georgia; and other markets to be named.
Each community will commit local leadership, staff time, and matching resources to run its own challenges, built on the playbook MDIA developed in Miami-Dade.
What they're saying: "Technology innovation is far outpacing the ability of cities and municipalities to drive the changes they want to see," said Leigh-Ann Buchanan, president and chief executive officer of MDIA. The approach, she added, works "alongside existing procurement rules to break down the barriers cities often face."
The signal: Governments are under pressure to match the digital experiences residents expect elsewhere, yet slow procurement cycles keep them behind. By testing solutions before committing funding, MDIA is pitching a repeatable path for cities to buy from startups faster — and the Knight grant is a bet that the Miami model can travel.
