What's the deal? OpenAI is in early talks to acquire Trail of BitsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a New York software security firm that finds and fixes vulnerabilities in open-source projects, The InformationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → reported on 13 October 2026. The size of a potential deal could not be learned.

Who is Trail of Bits? Founded in 2012, the firm has more than 40 employees. It specialises in auditing and patching bugs across widely used open-source libraries.

Why now? The two companies have worked together since June 2026, when they launched Patch the Planet, pairing OpenAI's Codex and GPT-5.5-Cyber models with Trail of Bits engineers to hunt bugs across open-source libraries. In one week, they found hundreds of bugs inside software like cURL, Python, and the Go project, merging 37 patches with more in flight.

What's the endgame? OpenAI is attempting to build a sizable cybersecurity business, per the reporting. An acquisition would hand it a credible auditing bench and a distribution channel for its security models.

What could go wrong? The talks land in a week when OpenAI has been in security headlines for less flattering reasons, including the arrest of a Saudi OpenAI engineer over a USB audio recorder found in an executive conference room.

The signal: If the deal closes, it marks a shift in how frontier labs view security — treating enterprise services as a product line rather than a safety cost.
