Ambio raises €5.1M seed to fix recycled plastics buying with AI matchmaking

What's the deal? Helsinki-based AmbioDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised €5.1 million in a seed round led by b2venture, with Montis and existing investor Lifeline Ventures participating. The startup runs an AI-native procurement service for recycled plastics, handling everything from sourcing materials to arranging long-term delivery.

How it works: Buyers tell Ambio which polymer they need, with specifications, volume, and delivery date. Ambio matches those requests to vetted suppliers and manages the logistics, acting as a principal rather than a passive marketplace.

The vetting: Supplier checks begin with inspections of the recycling process, in person or online. Ambio compares technical data sheets against certificates of analysis and may send samples to a third-party lab. Buyers receive test batches of a few hundred grams up to 25kg for their production lines.

What's the money for? International expansion and diversifying the polymer types Ambio handles. It serves customers in the Nordics and Germany, mostly in construction and packaging, and began operating in France two weeks ago. Co-founder and chief executive officer Tommi Bergström said wider recycled-plastics use would cut the EU's reliance on imported fossil feedstock.

Why now? Bergström, a former Boston Consulting GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → consultant, and chief operating officer Elmo Pakkanen founded Ambio in February 2023. "As early as 2023 we recognised that the recycled plastics market was flawed, that the supply side was fragmented," he told Tech Funding News. "There are numerous quality problems, inefficiencies in pricing, and no effective means by which the parties involved in the market can trade in a scalable and reliable manner."

What could go wrong? Demand is weak. According to S&P Global, nearly one million tonnes of capacity was expected to be lost between 2023 and the end of 2025, out of 13.2 million tonnes across about 850 plants. Cheap imports, regulatory barriers, and a widening price gap have pushed buyers back to virgin material.

The competition: Rival marketplace CirplusDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → entered liquidation in March. Bergström names traders and distributors as competitors but said "our greatest competition is the status quo" — customers still buying virgin plastic made from oil.

The signal: Most venture money in plastics recycling has chased supply — €15.5 million for a PET plant, £9 million for Epoch Biodesign, $30 million for Syntetica. Ambio bets on the demand side instead. The round ranks above the 96th percentile for all-time seed deals in Finland's energy sector, a sign investors see room in fixing who buys recycled plastic, not just who makes it.
