Amazon in talks to buy AI chip startup Decart for $7B

What's the deal? Amazon is in talks to acquire San Francisco AI startup Decart in a deal that could value it at about $7 billion, according to The Wall Street JournalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. People familiar with the matter say an agreement could come soon if negotiations hold and no rival bidder emerges.

What does Decart do? Founded in 2023 by three Israeli engineers — the Leitersdorf brothers and Moshe Shalev — Decart builds software that makes it easier for developers to switch between different AI chips. It is also developing world models called Lucy and Oasis, which generate and simulate 3D environments.

What's the strategic rationale? Amazon has built a custom AI chip, Trainium3, to compete with Nvidia. AWSDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → was impressed by Decart's founders after meeting them in 2025 and gave the startup early access to Trainium3, per the report.

Why now? Anthropic had earlier discussed buying it for about $6 billion and conducted due diligence before walking away in September.

What could go wrong? The deal is still in negotiations and could fall apart. Any acquisition would also hinge on no rival bidder stepping in.

The signal: The $7 billion price tag, well above Decart's May valuation, shows how aggressively cloud giants are paying to loosen Nvidia's grip on AI hardware. For Amazon, owning a layer that lets developers move between chips strengthens the case for its own silicon.
