The startup builds AI-powered voice moderation for multiplayer games and will use the money for global expansion and product development.
What does it do? VoicePatrol detects extreme toxicity in live voice chat and acts within five seconds, serving studios from independents to AAA developers across PC, console, and VR.
How well does it work? Within three weeks of enabling auto-warn and auto-mute, customers saw severe toxicity drop 55%-75% across public lobbies. The company says customers also cut monthly moderation costs by 30%-70% while expanding coverage to 100% of public lobbies.
Why now? Founded during the pandemic as gaming surged, VoicePatrol targets a $213.9 billion industry where player safety is becoming a pressing concern. "As multiplayer experiences continue to scale, player safety is becoming a critical challenge for game developers and platforms," said Robert Herscovici, investment director at GapMinder.
How it works: The company monitors public lobbies only, deletes audio after processing except as evidence in severe cases, and leaves bans to human review. "There are no automatic kicks or bans, those decisions should be made manually after human review," said Matei Trebien, chief executive officer and co-founder.
The approach: VoicePatrol starts with a free two-week audit that flags live public lobbies, showing studios the gap between reported incidents and those that go undetected. The harder machine-learning problem, Trebien says, is distinguishing genuine abuse from banter while running cheaply on its own AWS infrastructure.
The signal: GapMinder is betting that live voice moderation becomes a standard layer in the multiplayer gaming stack — a wager that studios will pay to clean up voice chat as online communities keep scaling.
