What's the endgame? The acquisition lets Carbonzero widen its reach in Canada's compliance carbon markets. Through Gitxaała Nation's ownership of carbon credits from the Great Bear Rainforest, Carbonzero will expand into British Columbia's Output-Based Pricing System compliance market, adding to its existing voluntary-market and corporate climate work.

Why it matters: GECO chief executive officer Michael Uehara said Carbonzero brings "deep expertise, an established reputation, and more than 20 years of experience" that GECO can build on to grow its capacity in climate and carbon markets.

What's next? The two see room to strengthen First Nations participation in climate initiatives, develop new partnerships, and support organisations shifting to a lower-carbon economy.

The signal: The deal marks a move by an Indigenous-owned enterprise to take a direct stake in Canada's carbon markets, pairing credit ownership with established accounting expertise as compliance regimes expand.
