Ledgebrook raises $200M to scale AI underwriting for hard-to-place risks

What's the deal? Ledgebrook, a Boston-based AI-native specialty insurance platform, has raised $200 million in primary equity financing. The round was co-led by Allianz XDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the strategic investment arm of the Allianz GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Rockefeller Capital ManagementDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, with existing and new investors also taking part.

What does Ledgebrook do? Founded in 2022 by Harvard mathematician and actuary Gage Caligaris, it writes general liability, professional liability, and specialty cover for mid-sized businesses in the excess and surplus (E&S) market, distributed exclusively through wholesale brokers.

Its proprietary platform, Blackbird, reads submissions, classifies risk, and calculates a technical price — often quoting in hours rather than weeks, with experienced underwriters making the final call. The company is on track to surpass $1 billion in cumulative premium written since it began writing business in 2023.

What's the money for? Ledgebrook will use the funds to scale its technology and extend Blackbird. Separately, Allianz ReDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has agreed to a multi-year reinsurance agreement with the company.

Why Allianz? The deal diversifies Allianz X's US property and casualty platform, which spans micro to mid-sized segments. Ledgebrook's position in mid-sized E&S general liability fills a gap for the investor.

The thesis. Dr. Nazim Cetin, chief executive officer of Allianz X, said: "The industry is applying AI to its simplest risks first, because that is where automation comes easily." He argued the bigger opportunity sits in "complex, hard to place business, where underwriting judgment is scarce and slow decisions cost the most."

Why now? John Mullen, president of E&S at Ledgebrook, said the segment "is seeing strong multi-year growth," as admitted carriers tighten their appetite and push once-routine risks into the E&S channel.

Ledgebrook employs around 300 people, including some 80 underwriters and 50 engineers. In August 2026, AM BestDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → assigned its carrier a Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent), completing its transition to a full-stack platform.

The signal: At $200 million, the round sits in the 96th percentile of all-time late-stage VC fintech rounds in the US, underscoring investor appetite for AI applied to the harder end of underwriting rather than the easy, automatable risks.
