Cirrus Logic buys Italy's INVENTVM to deepen chip engineering muscle

What's the deal? Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS) has acquired INVENTVM SemiconductorDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a fabless chip company based in Pavia, Italy. Terms were not disclosed, and Cirrus Logic said the deal will not materially affect its revenue.

Who's involved? Austin-based Cirrus Logic designs low-power, high-precision mixed-signal processing chips for top mobile and consumer applications. INVENTVM specialises in mixed-signal power management and audio integrated circuits.

Why now? The two companies have collaborated closely for several years, so integration starts from a known relationship rather than a cold start. Cirrus Logic chief executive officer John Forsyth said its pipeline of opportunities "is the strongest we've ever had."

What's the endgame? The deal adds intellectual property, engineering capacity, and talent, and gives Cirrus Logic a stronger foothold in a region where it plans to expand. It supports a long-term strategy to move into new applications and markets.

INVENTVM chief executive officer Michele Chiabrera said joining Cirrus Logic "will create new opportunities to advance our technology, support customers, and continue innovating as part of a larger global organization."

The signal: For a company known for audio and power chips in consumer devices, buying an established European design team is a bet on talent and IP over scale. It points to continued consolidation among specialist semiconductor firms racing to broaden their product reach.
