Try Dealroom → to expand its Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and small business loan fund. The Memphis-based nonprofit announced the grant on October 6, 2026, at a launch event at EpicenterDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in Memphis.

Where it goes: The funding will extend USI's lending, business support infrastructure, and application system to entrepreneurs in five additional cities — Memphis, Fort Worth, Houston, Jacksonville, and Philadelphia. Beyond financing, business owners will gain access to credit-building tools, technical assistance, and networks.

Why now? The grant builds on a $1.5 million award Truist Foundation made to USI in 2023, which backed similar work in Norfolk, Baltimore, and Fort Myers.

What's the endgame? USI aims to reach entrepreneurs who have faced barriers to traditional capital. Since 2018, its CDFI has raised and deployed nearly $12 million in financing for affordable housing and economic growth.

"This work is about more than access to capital; it is about ownership, economic power, and creating the conditions for people and communities to build wealth on their own terms," said Donovan Duncan, USI's executive vice president and chief operating officer.

The signal: The grant ranks in the 93rd percentile by size among US grant rounds tied to community and family-focused work over the past 48 months, out of more than 1,000 comparable deals. That scale underscores growing institutional backing for CDFIs as a channel for directing capital to underserved entrepreneurs.
