What's the endgame? Co-founders Veeraj Shah and Sanketh Andhavarapu want to build the operating system for hospital operations. The software automates manual scheduling, forecasts demand and orchestrates staff across thousands of beds in real time.

Why now? Labour is the largest expense in healthcare, accounting for 50% to 60% of hospital operating costs and approaching $1 trillion in annual US spend. Most systems still manage schedules and beds with spreadsheets, group texts and phone calls.

By the numbers: A single large health system can spend more than $100 million a year on premium overtime and agency labour. Clinical managers spend two to four hours a day planning who works and where, Shah said.

Shah, who is chief executive officer, saw the problem as a medical student and while working inside staffing offices and command centres. He frames the challenge in stark terms.

"Health systems are managing this problem that's 100,000 times more mathematically complicated than air traffic control at a major airport on disconnected nodes of paper and spreadsheets," he said.

The backstory: Vitalize went through Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch. It began as a healthcare worker wellness app before pivoting to hospital operations, starting with workforce and capacity management.

The signal: With capacity planning and staffing still siloed across most hospitals, investors are betting that AI logistics tools can unlock a cost base measured in hundreds of billions. Vitalize is pitching itself as the "air traffic control" layer for that fragmented system.
