Japan's Donut Robotics raises $1.9M to deploy care humanoids

What's the deal? Japanese humanoid robotics startup Donut RoboticsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised US$2.31M in an early-stage round from Charm Care CorporationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market-listed operator of private senior living facilities. Charm Care will subscribe to common shares under a capital and business alliance.

What's the endgame? The money funds scaled deployment of "physical AI" and robotic solutions across Charm Care's network of more than 100 private nursing homes in the Kansai and Greater Tokyo areas. The two have piloted Donut's bipedal humanoid, "cinnamon 1," at select fee-based homes since July 2026.

What does cinnamon do? The roughly 170cm humanoid uses Vision-Language-Action (VLA) AI to patrol facilities, recognise its surroundings, and translate what it sees into verbal descriptions. Both companies plan to move the technology from pilots into operational workflows.

Why now? Japan is one of the world's most rapidly ageing countries, and its eldercare sector faces a chronic shortage of care workers. The alliance targets that gap directly.

"Eldercare presents many challenges for physical AI, but I believe we must overcome these," said Taisuke Ono, representative director of Donut Robotics. He added that he hopes cinnamon will eventually move in ways "almost unrecognizable compared with today."

The backstory: Founded in 2014 in a Kitakyushu garage and incorporated in 2016, Donut Robotics has paired its hardware with software, including gesture-control technology for noisy environments. It is now shifting assembly and chip work locally to build a fully Japan-made humanoid pipeline.

The signal: Though modest in size — the round sits near the middle of the pack for early-stage deals — the deal shows eldercare operators backing humanoids not as experiments but as tools to plug a widening labour gap. In ageing Japan, the customer is becoming the investor.
