What do they do? Both companies help e-commerce clients build AI-powered mobile apps with customer engagement and sales conversion features. Reactiv, founded in 2023 by former Shopify employees, stands out with its Clips feature, which places part of a retailer's app inside a shopper's phone from an ad. Kin, founded in 2022 by ex-Meta employees, specialises in social media features, giving apps "For You" pages, forums, or pulled-through Instagram posts.

Why now? Kin's founders are pivoting to a new AI marketing startup, which put the company up for grabs. "[Acquiring Kin] definitely wasn't in my 2026 bingo card; I think part of it was kind of opportunistic," said co-founder and chief operating officer Zack Elias.

What's in the deal? Since Kin's team is moving on, the acquisition covers only its technology, intellectual property, and customers, plus one engineer. That brings Reactiv's headcount to 31. Elias did not disclose the purchase price.

What's the endgame? Reactiv will keep Kin as a separate product through Black Friday — the e-commerce world's "Super Bowl" — then explore merging the two platforms. "The parts that we're interested in migrating into Reactiv longer term do fall around those social capabilities," Elias said.

Why it matters: The acquisition follows a previously undisclosed $6-million seed extension round that closed earlier this year, bringing Reactiv's total external funding to roughly $12 million. The deal adds "strategic logos" to a client base already growing with upcoming apps for Indigo and Browns ShoesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

The signal: Elias sees big brands abandoning custom web and app builds in favour of bespoke commerce platforms, citing Reitmans' and Canada Goose's recent moves to Shopify. "They're trying to move to a platform that is equally as capable, but perhaps there's a lower total cost of ownership [or] it's easier to manage," he said. Reactiv's consolidation of a rival is one more step in that shift.
