Nelnet buys India's Entab to expand K-12 school tech into world's largest education market

What's the deal? Nelnet Business Services (NBS)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a division of Nelnet, Inc.Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, has acquired Entab InfotechDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a New Delhi-based provider of school administration, management, and learning technology software in India. The deal, announced October 5, was for an undisclosed sum. The business will operate as "EntabDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Nelnet company," keeping the Entab brand, leadership, and customer relationships.

Who's involved? Founded in New Delhi in 2000, Entab runs its flagship CampusCare platform — an enterprise resource planning (ERP) and learning management system (LMS) — serving more than 1,000 schools and over 1.5 million students across 28 Indian states. NBS provides payment technology and community management tools to nearly 12,000 K-12 schools and more than 1,200 higher education institutions worldwide.

Why now? The acquisition marks a step in the international expansion strategy of NBS, extending its school management, tuition, and campus-technology offerings into one of the world's largest K-12 education markets.

What changes for customers? Little, at least for now. Co-founders Lawrence Zacharias and Shaji Thomas, along with Entab's 290 associates, will remain with the company and keep its existing New Delhi offices.

What's the endgame? "This acquisition represents an important milestone in our strategy to build a global platform that helps educational institutions operate more effectively and better serve students and families," said DeeAnn Wenger, president of Nelnet Business Services. Entab CEO Zacharias said joining NBS would let the company "accelerate our product roadmap while continuing to serve our schools with the same team."

The signal: Nelnet is betting on India to grow its education technology footprint, buying an established local player rather than building from scratch. The thoughtful, deliberate integration — Nelnet's own words — points to a playbook aimed at scale without disrupting the trust Entab has earned.
