Shakira's haircare brand isima lands $5M debt facility

What's the deal? isima, a haircare brand founded by Colombian singer Shakira, secured a $5 million working capital financing agreement from JPalmer Collective (JPC). The asset-based lender focuses on high-growth, women-led, and natural products companies.

What's the endgame? isima describes itself as a Latin-rooted, science-powered haircare brand built for curly hair types and textures. The financing will fund growth and support working capital as it scales in the premium personal care market.

Why debt? For an early-stage brand, debt financing provides runway without diluting ownership. "Access to the right capital at the right time is everything for an early-stage brand like isima," said Sid Katari, co-founder and CEO.

Why now? Katari pointed to demand the brand is already seeing. The funding, he said, gives isima room "to scale with intention, meet the momentum we're already seeing in the market," and reach customers "whose needs have not been understood by the haircare industry for too long."

The investor's view: "The brand was born out of Shakira's own experience with curly hair, and they're intentionally bringing serious science to hair types and textures that mainstream haircare has overlooked," said Jennifer Palmer, founder and CEO of JPC. She framed the deal as consistent with the firm's mandate to back women founders.

The signal: A celebrity-founded brand turning to asset-based lending rather than equity points to a maturing playbook in beauty — using a famous name to drive demand, then financing inventory and working capital with debt. For isima, the test is converting early momentum into durable market share.
