Asobi System acquires content studio Contents X to build original IP

What's the deal? Tokyo-based culture company Asobi SystemDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired a stake in Contents XDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a corporate content studio, through a capital and business partnership. Terms were undisclosed.

Who are they? Asobi System manages artists including Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Atarashii Gakko! and FRUITS ZIPPER, and runs businesses across events, media, and IP. Contents X, founded in March 2026, produces corporate manga, animation, and video (Creative X) and offers sales and marketing support (Sales X).

What's the endgame? The two plan to combine Asobi System's entertainment network and production know-how with Contents X's corporate creative and sales functions. They aim to expand existing businesses and jointly develop new original content IP.

Why it matters: Contents X wants to move beyond contract work. "We want to be a company that generates its own works and IP one after another, not one that ends with outsourcing," said director Kota Uike (translated from Japanese).

In their words: Asobi System chief executive Yusuke Nakagawa said the deal would help "realise ideas that Asobi System could not have shaped on its own." Contents X chief executive Daiki Kuromiya framed the logic simply: "The ability to make something good and the ability to communicate it are different skills."

The signal: The tie-up reflects a growing convergence between corporate content production and entertainment IP creation, as studios look to turn client work into the base for building and monetising their own characters and franchises.
