Biotia raises oversubscribed $9M to scale infectious disease diagnostics

What's the deal? Biotia, a New York-based clinical metagenomics company, has raised an oversubscribed $9 million financing round. The capital will scale its New York City laboratory, launch additional women's health diagnostics, and expand into orthopedics.

What's the endgame? Biotia's BIOTIA-ID Urine Test identifies the cause of recurrent and complicated urinary tract infections with 97% sensitivity and 99% specificity. The test is available to physicians and patients across all 50 states.

The financing exceeds Biotia's previously announced Series A. Alongside the raise, the company expanded its board and advisory team: DigitalDx Ventures chief executive officer Michele Colucci joins as board chair, Barry as a board member, and Fields as a board observer.

Why now? "This funding enables us to do what matters most: expand advanced diagnostics available for patients suffering from chronic infections who have been failed by standard laboratory methods," said Niamh O'Hara, chief executive officer and cofounder. She said the capital will fund an expanded test menu, reimbursement efforts, and clinician adoption.

The signal: At $9 million, the round sits in the lower tier for its stage, reflecting a focused rather than headline-grabbing raise. But the backing of seasoned healthcare operators — including the VillageMD cofounders — signals investor conviction that precision infectious disease testing can cut costs while improving outcomes in underserved areas like women's health.
