What does it do? Founded by brothers Tom and Dimitri Borgers, Walapay uses blockchain and a single API to move money across currencies and geographies. It offers direct integrations in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, helping businesses settle accounts, receive collections, and make payouts.

The problem it targets: A single cross-border payment today may pass through four or five separate banks and payment providers before it settles, the company said. Each adds fees, delays, and potential points of failure — and most platforms never reach the last mile, where money lands in a local account, in local currency, through a local bank.

How it works: Walapay gives fintechs and payment service providers instant settlement for multicurrency accounts, including stablecoins pegged to assets like the US dollar. It lets companies issue their own stablecoins, convert idle cash into yield-generating accounts, and choose their own custody arrangements.

Why now? "We believe next-generation payment rails will become first-class financial infrastructure, but the banking system isn't going away anytime soon," said co-founder and chief executive officer Tom Borgers. The company plans to use the funding to expand its licensing footprint, deepen banking partnerships, and grow its team.

What's the endgame? Walapay is also positioning for AI-native commerce. As autonomous agents begin moving money on their own, it intends to treat AI-driven payments as another market its existing infrastructure can serve rather than building a separate product.

The signal: At $4.6 million, the round sits in the upper tier of seed deals — above roughly 77% of comparable rounds. It reflects investor appetite for stablecoin rails aimed at emerging markets, where the gap between global platforms and local settlement remains wide.
