Subvocal raises $1.3M pre-seed to turn silent speech into computer commands

What's the endgame? Cofounder and chief executive officer Aarush Yadav wants to change how people talk to machines. "Computers have become far more powerful, but the way we talk to them has changed very little," he said. "We believe the best way to interact with computers and AI agents will be silent, seamless and far faster than what exists today."
How it works: The device captures physical signals from silently mouthed speech and translates them into text and commands. Yadav, who handles the sensing hardware and firmware, says prototypes have hit text-entry speeds above 200 words per minute.
Why now? Yadav and cofounder Arnav Kumar, both Georgia Institute of Technology computer science students, built an early prototype at Stanford University's TreeHacks in February 2026 using muscle-sensing electrodes and machine learning. They didn't win, but moved to San Francisco to develop the product full-time.
Afore Capital led with an initial $500,000 investment in April 2026, at the prototype stage. Follow-on funding, angel money, and a $500,000 commitment from Y Combinator brought the total to roughly $1.3 million.
What's next? The company is part of Y Combinator's Fall 2026 batch and won YC's Group 1 Product Showcase, voted on by alumni and batchmates. It is expanding the team and plans to open pre-orders in the coming months.
The signal: Even at pre-seed, the $1.3 million round lands in the upper tier for its stage — a sign of investor appetite for new interfaces as AI agents multiply and the keyboard-and-voice model shows its age.
