Reverion lands €150M to build a fuel cell megafactory for the AI power crunch

What's the deal? German energy startup Reverion has raised €150 million ($175 million) in a Series B led by deeptech and climate fund Kembara. The round — the company's largest to date — will fund a megafactory in Germany to scale production tenfold.

What does it build? Reverion makes container-based power plants using solid oxide fuel cells that convert gas into electricity without combustion and capture the CO₂ in pure form. Run on biogas, the plant's carbon balance is negative; in reverse, it turns surplus wind and solar power into storable gases.

The efficiency claim: Reverion says its systems hit 74.2% electrical efficiency in live customer operation. According to the company, that is a world record for thermal power plants and nearly double conventional generators.

The €150 million round ranks in the 96th percentile of all-time Series B rounds for German energy startups.

Why now? Demand is shifting from biogas farms to the technology sector, where energy-hungry data centres face grid connections delayed by years. Reverion's containers generate power where it is consumed, using existing gas infrastructure — and with biogas, a data centre becomes a carbon sink.

"We are seeing explosive international demand for our systems," says Felix Fischer, chief operating officer and co-founder. Chief executive officer Stephan Herrmann adds the financing lets the company scale "into the megawatt class."

What's the endgame? The new German site will add 250 megawatts of annual manufacturing capacity, ten times the current level, and up to 800 jobs. Reverion says its project pipeline holds revenue potential of more than $2 billion, with the first international deliveries due later this year.

The signal: As AI data centres outpace grid expansion, dispatchable on-site generation is drawing serious capital — and a Bavarian fuel cell maker is betting that clean, round-the-clock power can win the race.
