Essar to build $18B steel plant in Iowa, largest in US history
What's the deal? India's Essar Group will invest $18 billion to build what US President Donald Trump called the largest steel plant in American history. The project runs through Essar's US subsidiary, Mesabi MetallicsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and will be located in Iowa. Trump announced the plan officially at the White House.
Who was there? Essar Group co-founder and vice chairman Ravi Ruia, Mesabi Metallics executive board chairman Rewant Ruia, and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick joined Trump for the announcement.
What's the endgame? Essar is building a fully integrated domestic steel supply chain. Raw materials for the Iowa plant will come from a large iron ore mine to be built in Minnesota — the first new iron ore mine in the US in 50 years, according to Trump.
Why now? The Trump administration's 50% tariff on foreign-made steel is pushing major overseas producers to set up plants inside the US. Mining ore and turning it into steel domestically is, in Trump's words, a rare and significant shift.
Rewant Ruia framed the move in personal terms, describing the launch as a return "home." He spent more than half of his education years in the US, he said.
The signal: The deal shows how US tariff policy is reshaping global manufacturing decisions, drawing foreign capital into American production. For Essar, a fully integrated mine-to-steel operation on US soil is a long-term bet on domestic demand and protected margins.
