CEO and co-founder Jeff Peel will keep leading the company and retain significant ownership alongside co-founder Ben Thorud.

What does Tactacam do? Founded in 2013 and based in Billings, Tactacam sells cellular trail and security cameras to more than one million subscribers across the US. It helped pioneer the cellular trail camera category with its Reveal line in 2020, then moved into security in 2024 with Defend, a range for residential and commercial property monitoring beyond Wi-Fi range.

What's the endgame? GTCR will fund new product development and expanded distribution across both the Reveal and Defend lines. The firm frames Tactacam as a mix of connected hardware, proprietary software, and subscription services.

Why GTCR? The deal fits the firm's record in consumer subscription and video-based monitoring, said David Donnini, its managing director and head of business and consumer services. "That combination is a strong fit with our experience investing in technology-enabled consumer and commercial subscription businesses," he said.

The rationale: "We built Tactacam by staying close to the customer and understanding how they use our products, whether they are watching wildlife or monitoring a property," Peel said. He added the partnership will support continued investment in Reveal and Defend.

The signal: GTCR's past and current bets, including Protection 1Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, SimpliSafe, and Consumer CellularDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, point to a broader push into subscription-driven monitoring. Tactacam extends that thesis into the outdoor market while betting its cellular platform can scale into home and commercial security.
