What's the deal? Funds managed by InfraRed Capital PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → have agreed to acquire 100% of Hector RailDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Scandinavia's largest private rail freight operator, from fellow infrastructure investor AncalaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The deal value was not disclosed.
Who's involved? Founded in 2004, Hector Rail runs a fleet of more than 100 locomotives with just over 300 drivers across its Scandinavian and German operations. It hauls lumber, steel, energy products, wood chips, and containerised consumer and industrial goods.
Why it matters: Hector Rail is one of few operators equipped to run cross-border freight between Scandinavia and Germany, giving it a critical role in regional supply chains.
Why now? Ancala is exiting after a six-year partnership begun in 2020, during which Hector Rail expanded its electric fleet, integrated its Scandinavian and German operations, and optimised locomotive use, maintenance, and procurement.
What's the endgame? InfraRed plans to accelerate growth with fresh investment in additional locomotives and a programme of heavy maintenance and upgrades to meet rising demand.
"Hector Rail has the attributes that we look for: a well-established, robust business with solid infrastructure credentials," said Sean Watson, partner at InfraRed. Group chief executive officer Carsten Hinne called the transaction "a major milestone."
The signal: The handoff between two infrastructure managers underscores investor appetite for sustainable rail freight, positioned as a lower-carbon alternative to road transport within the EU.
