L-Nutra raises $84M Series D from Mubadala to scale longevity nutrition

What's the deal? L-Nutra, a Los Angeles-based longevity nutrition company, has closed an $83.5 million Series D round led by Mubadala Investment Company, an Abu Dhabi sovereign investor. The company announced the raise as it marked the tenth anniversary of ProlonDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, its Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD).

What's the endgame? L-Nutra will use the funding to expand research and grow internationally. Its footprint already extends beyond the US into Europe, Canada, Australia, and the Middle East.

What does it do? Founded in 2009 by Professor Valter Longo, L-Nutra sells clinically studied nutrition programs designed to support healthy aging. Its 5-Day FMD has been used by more than one million people, and its platform now spans longevity foods, medical nutrition therapy, and precision nutrition.

By the numbers: The company holds 136 patents in longevity and disease remission and has completed more than 40 clinical trials at 18 institutions, including Stanford, Harvard, and the Mayo Clinic. It says Prolon is recommended by over 12,000 practitioners.

In two recent human trials, Prolon was shown to induce autophagy — the cellular renewal process behind the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine — and to reverse biological age by an average of 2.5 years after three consecutive cycles.

Why now? "We pioneered the longevity category before it became mainstream," said chief executive officer Dr. Joseph Antoun. He said the company aims to become "the first nutrition company people turn to every day, whether they're healthy or managing an illness."

The signal: At $83.5 million, the round sits in the upper tier of funding deals by size, a notable figure for a nutrition-science company. Backed by a major sovereign investor, L-Nutra's raise reflects rising investor appetite for the longevity and food-as-medicine market as it moves toward the mainstream.
