Try Dealroom → has signed a $35 million syndicated loan with the OPEC Fund for International Development to expand financing for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Where the money goes: The financing targets Armenia's MSME sector, where access to capital often blocks further growth. The OPEC Fund's A-loan may also finance eligible climate-related projects.

Why now? Armenia's recent economic growth is driving demand for financing. "Fresh financing will support further economic expansion, creating jobs and providing new opportunities," said OPEC Fund President Abdulhamid Alkhalifa.

The signing coincides with two milestones: the OPEC Fund's 50th anniversary and Armeconombank's 35th.

What's the endgame? Armeconombank chief executive officer Artak Arakelyan said the funds will help MSME clients "expand and grow." He added that the agreement followed strategic talks at the OPEC Fund's 2026 Development Forum in Vienna, describing it as a sign of "the trust placed in Armeconombank by the OPEC Fund and Allianz Global Investors."

The players: The OPEC Fund, established in 1976, is the only globally mandated development institution that finances non-member countries exclusively, having committed more than $32 billion across over 125 countries. Allianz Global Investors is an active asset manager with more than 700 investment professionals across 22 offices and €653 billion in assets under management.

The signal: The deal reflects how development finance institutions and private asset managers are teaming up to channel capital into emerging-market small businesses — a segment long underserved by traditional lenders.
