Anthropic pours US$6.47M more into Australian science, lifting total to US$8.41M

What it funds: Researchers will apply Claude to cancer biology, drug discovery, genomics, cardiovascular disease, stem cell research, clinical bioinformatics, and neuroscience. The rare disease stream, which followed a global call in July, has already awarded $330,000 in credits to five Australian teams.
In practice: At the Victor Chang institute, teams will use AI for genomic analysis, drug safety, and genetic diagnosis. Director and chief executive officer Jason Kovacic said AI helps "analyse complex data at scale and speed," with the aim of making genetic diagnosis fairer and more accurate.
The deep tech program backs founders tackling energy storage analytics, satellite collision avoidance, and fire-safe protective equipment. At the Garvan Institute, researchers are using AI to interrogate biological datasets and improve drug candidate design.
What's the endgame? Anthropic says that as its Australian team grows, it will offer deeper engineering and Applied AI support to partners. David Masters, head of policy for Australia and New Zealand, said the company will keep expanding grants aligned with the national research agenda.
The company is also building researcher-focused products, including Claude Science and a Model Hardware Standard research preview.
The signal: The expanded investment reflects a push to embed advanced AI tools within Australia's scientific ecosystem, tying foundational research to outcomes across health, energy, and safety. It also aligns with Australia's National AI Plan, positioning Anthropic close to the country's research agenda as it grows its local footprint.
