Adlib acquires Paperbox to give insurers audit-proof AI data

What's the deal? Adlib SoftwareDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has agreed to acquire PaperboxDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, combining Paperbox's agentic AI intake for insurance communications with Adlib's data foundation, which logs where every extracted value came from. Terms were not disclosed. The deal was announced on September 21, 2026.

What each company does: Paperbox turns inbound email, portals, and attachments into structured tasks and cases as they arrive. Adlib converts what's inside those documents into governed, audit-ready data, linking every extracted value back to its source.

Why now? Insurers are moving fast on agentic AI but lack proof in their data. According to EXLDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s 2026 US Enterprise AI Study, 62% of insurance AI pilots now reach production, yet only 24% of insurers rate themselves as leading on data management maturity.

What's the problem? Grant ThorntonDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s 2026 AI Impact Survey of 100 insurance executives found 61% said their boards had set AI governance policies, but only 24% were very confident they could pass an independent governance review in 90 days. Some 68% said their AI controls exist but the evidence is scattered across teams and tools.

The failure is concrete. When a coverage decision is questioned 18 months later, an adjuster reopens every document to rebuild the data trail by hand — and one late-arriving document restarts the whole process.

What's the endgame? Together, the companies aim to move a carrier from a full inbox to data an auditor can stand behind. Paperbox removes manual triage at the front door; Adlib checks each document against the carrier's rules and writes the audit trail as the work happens.

"Nearly every insurer now has an AI governance policy on paper. Far fewer can prove the data behind it holds up," said Chris Huff, chief executive officer of Adlib. He added the goal is to put that capability "within reach of regional carriers, MGAs and TPAs, not only the ones with the staff to build it themselves."

"Paperbox was built to remove friction at the very start of the insurance value chain," said Frederic Stallaert, chief executive officer of Paperbox. Joining Adlib means what reaches an adjuster "is accurate and audit-ready before a person ever sees it," he said.

The signal: The deal reflects a shift in enterprise AI from ambition to accountability. As regulators tighten scrutiny, insurers face a gap between governance policies on paper and evidence that holds up — and 44% of those surveyed by Grant Thornton said compliance challenges have already caused AI projects to fail or underperform.
