Portrait Bank opens in Orlando market with $43M seed round

What's the deal? Portrait BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has opened in Winter Park, Florida, after raising more than $43 million from 256 local investors. It is Central Florida's first de novo bank since 2017.

Why now? The bank received its charter from the Florida Office of Financial Regulation in June and spent the summer onboarding its first clients before opening at 941 W. Morse Ave.

What's the endgame? Portrait is targeting small and midsize businesses, plus individuals seeking local decision-making and relationship-based banking. Its model gives clients direct access to bankers who can make credit and fraud decisions locally, without routing requests through distant operating centers.

The launch bets on a widening gap in the market. The four-county Orlando area had 38 community banks in 2000; that number fell to six by early 2025 and has since dropped further after the sales of Winter Park National BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Meanwhile, the region keeps growing. Orlando added nearly 40,000 residents between 2024 and 2025, ranking as the 10th-fastest-growing US metro area, according to US Census Bureau data.

Founder, president and chief executive officer Erik Weiner sees that split as the opening. He brings 30 years of banking experience, including senior roles at Fifth Third Bank, BankUnitedDealroom has a profile for this one. Weiner's pitch: "This region has grown significantly, and it needs a bank that's committed to evolving with it." He added that Portrait was built for people who want "sophisticated financial solutions without losing the personal relationships and local decision-making that define a great community bank."

Portrait is pairing that relationship model with technology usually found at larger institutions. It has built agentic AI into its fraud detection and digital banking platforms, including automated alerts meant to flag suspicious activity faster, while keeping local staff on lending and customer decisions.

The signal: At more than $43 million, Portrait's seed round sits in the top 1% of US fintech seed rounds by size, all-time. The outsized raise — funded entirely by local investors — shows how consolidation can create room for well-capitalised community banks even as the sector overall shrinks.
