Moneda raises $4.5M in oversubscribed commercial paper debut

What's the deal? Moneda Investment LimitedDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised N6 billion (roughly $4.5 million) through its Series 1 Commercial Paper issuance, its first under a N30 billion Commercial Paper Programme. The debt sale drew 120% subscription, letting the company beat its N5 billion target by N1 billion.

What's the endgame? MonedaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → finances businesses across Africa's natural resource value chains through alternative credit and operational support. It said the proceeds will help local firms capture more value from major investments, particularly small and medium enterprises that localise them.

Why now? The raise marks a shift from Moneda's earlier reliance on a close funding network to tapping the broader capital market directly. "Prior to now, our funding was largely within a close network, but with this programme we are approaching the market directly and becoming accountable to a broader investing public," said Emeka, chief financial officer.

Group chief executive officer Ejike Egbuagu framed the outcome as validation of an unconventional model. "It is a big deal to put yourself out there in the capital markets and to be accepted, understood and welcomed by the market," he said.

Egbuagu added that Moneda would deploy the capital before seeking more. "We will first deploy the capital we have raised properly, demonstrate how it has been put to work, and then return to the market for more," he said. The N30 billion programme leaves room for further issuances.

The signal: Moneda's raise adds to a surge in Nigerian commercial paper issuances in 2026. In the first 10 months of 2025, papers approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission hit N1.37 trillion, though actual drawdowns reached about N753 billion — a utilisation rate near 54%, signalling strong corporate appetite for short-term debt that doesn't always convert to cash raised.
