The Virginia-based company, which runs an AI agricultural commodity intelligence platform, announced the investment alongside a new global ranking of national vulnerability to food crises.
What's the endgame? Helios AI will use the money to expand its predictive food and agricultural intelligence. The goal: helping businesses, governments, and humanitarian organisations anticipate threats to food availability, pricing, and supply.
The product: The Hunger Exposure Index ranks countries from zero to 100 on four weighted pillars — climate risk, fertiliser and energy exposure, foreign exchange constraints, and cereal import dependence. Countries scoring 70 or higher are flagged as facing "Critical" exposure. It draws on public data from the US Department of Agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the International Monetary Fund, plus Helios AI's own forecasting models.
Why now? The index landed ahead of Climate Week NYC, as part of a report titled "Who Can Withstand the Next Food Shock?" It highlights a paradox: the world is producing record quantities of food, yet hundreds of millions still face acute hunger.
The company's argument is about buffers, not output. "A failed harvest is survivable if a country can buy the difference on the global market, but it becomes catastrophic when it can't," said Francisco Martin-Rayo, co-founder and chief executive officer.
The hire: Helios AI added food security specialist Helga Flores Trejo as senior advisor to the CEO. She will help expand the company's work with governments, humanitarian organisations, and global food businesses — the same institutional customers the funding targets.
The signal: The investor list is the story here. Five major grocery retailers are betting on predictive supply-chain intelligence, a sign that climate and geopolitical disruption have become boardroom concerns for the companies that stock the world's shelves.
