Try Dealroom →, a special needs and general education student bus operator based in Downers Grove, Illinois. The deal, effective September 18, 2026, adds Sunrise to STA's Family of Brands. Terms were not disclosed.

What does Sunrise do? Founded nearly 40 years ago, it runs a fleet of roughly 1,000 buses, vans and SUVs across Illinois and Connecticut. It transports more than 23,000 students daily, with a focus on special education and differently-abled riders.

What's the rationale? The acquisition expands STA's footprint across multiple sites in Illinois and Connecticut, deepening its presence in both states. STA said Sunrise's focus on safety, reliability, and care matches its own mission.

What changes for customers? Little, in the near term. STA said day-to-day operations will continue without interruption and that it will work with Sunrise leadership and staff on a "seamless transition."

"Their commitment to technology and innovation partnered with their strong local leadership and deep ties to the communities aligns perfectly with who we are as a company," said Gene Kowalczewski, chief executive officer of STA.

The signal: STA's model — pairing local operators with the resources of a larger organisation — points to continued consolidation in the student transportation sector, where scale and safety technology increasingly define competition.
