Prudential to exit Alexforbes stake in $185M South African deal
What's the deal? Prudential Financial is selling its entire stake in AlexforbesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Johannesburg-listed retirement and financial services group, in transactions valued at roughly $185 million. The sale is split in two: Alexforbes will repurchase about 372.8 million shares held by Prudential's indirect subsidiary New Veld, while ARC AF Holdings will acquire New Veld's remaining 74.1 million shares.
Why now? The move follows a strategy Prudential announced in August to narrow its geographic footprint by exiting emerging markets. The company said it wants to concentrate capital, talent, and management attention on markets where it sees the strongest opportunities.
What's the endgame? Prudential, which manages roughly $1.6 trillion in assets, is reshaping itself around fewer geographies. Exiting a listed South African holding is a clean way to redeploy capital toward its core US, Asian, and European operations.
“Alexforbes has been an important and successful investment for Prudential, and we are proud of what we have accomplished together,” said David Legher, head of emerging markets at Prudential. He added that the transactions position Alexforbes “for continued success under a more concentrated ownership structure.”
What changes for Alexforbes? Ownership consolidates around Alexforbes itself and ARC AF Holdings. Prudential said it will keep supporting the company and its stakeholders through closing, expected in the first half of 2027.
What could go wrong? The deal still needs Alexforbes shareholder approval for the share sale, plus regulatory clearances and other customary conditions. Any of those could delay or reshape completion.
The signal: Large insurers are increasingly trimming emerging-market exposure to sharpen focus and free up capital. Prudential's Alexforbes exit shows that even long-held, profitable stakes are on the table when they sit outside a tightened strategic core.
