Japan's GEMBA raises $290K seed to digitise factory-floor improvement

What does GEMBA do? Based in Kariya, Aichi, it makes an app that digitises shop-floor improvement and issue tracking. Users import their own factory layout drawings to map where problems occur, and staff can use it from smartphones or tablets from day one.
Why now? Many Japanese factories still run quality management on paper and Excel. GEMBA cites two barriers to change: tools too complex to stick on the floor, and a lack of budget or IT staff for large systems. What the backers say: ANOBAKA's Kosei Kawano said reaching workers is hard unless a product is one they "truly need," praising Fujii's 15 years on factory floors. Hiroshima Venture Capital's Kosei Ogawa added that technology which does not know "the real friction" of the floor cannot drive meaningful change.
The signal: The raise is modest — landing in roughly the 16th percentile by amount — but it targets a large, under-digitised base of small and mid-sized manufacturers. With SaaS adoption maturing into an AI-driven phase, GEMBA is betting that shop-floor data, once captured, becomes the foundation for the sector's next efficiency gains.
