What's the endgame? LignoSphere turns kraft lignin, a side stream from pulp cooking, into nanoscale colloidal particles. Their spherical shape keeps them uniform and easy to mix into industrial formulations, letting the material replace synthetic phenolic compounds in glues and coatings.
Why now? The round funds development of the company's products to meet the standards of commercial concrete and steel coatings. LignoSphere has also won Business FinlandDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → backing for research on metal and concrete coatings, and plans to deepen work with partners and customers.
What's the strategic value? Teknor Apex brings more than capital. "Teknor Apex has spent a hundred years doing exactly what we are aiming for: making materials at industrial scale and delivering them to demanding customers," said chief executive officer Eero Knuutila (translated from Finnish). "That experience is as valuable to us as the money. At the same time, we get a vantage point on the US market."
The signal: Most kraft lignin is still burned for energy in pulp mills because its complex chemistry has long blocked wider use. Founded in 2022 on research from Aalto University and Häme University of Applied Sciences and protected by seven patents, LignoSphere is betting that industrial partners now see value in a bio-based alternative to synthetic chemicals.
