Enigmata raises $6.5M to run AI on encrypted data

Try Dealroom → emerged from stealth on September 10 with $6.5 million in seed funding led by Blockchange VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The Nashville-based startup will use the money to commercialize Enigmata Cipher, a patent-pending technology that lets AI train, search, and analyze data while it stays encrypted.

What's the endgame? Cipher targets AI workflows where sensitive data would otherwise be exposed — from model training on proprietary datasets to enterprise use of third-party AI, semantic search, and analytics. It converts records and documents into an encrypted form that AI and analytics tools can use on existing enterprise hardware.

Why now? The world's most valuable data — clinical records, transaction histories, archives — is often locked inside institutions that cannot risk exposing it. Cryptographers have chased computation on encrypted data for decades, but existing methods forced trade-offs among flexibility, performance, and security.

In Enigmata's internal benchmarks, models trained on Cipher-protected data matched the accuracy of models trained on raw data while training 8% to 10% faster. Cipher also supports targeted removal of individual records without retraining a model, which can help firms respond to data-deletion requests.

What they said: "Every era of computing has forced a choice between using data and protecting it. Enigmata Cipher ends that trade-off," said Scott Searle, co-founder and chief executive officer. "The world's most valuable data no longer has to stay locked away to stay protected."

Enigmata's longer-term aim is to turn Cipher into infrastructure for secure data licensing, letting institutions make encrypted datasets available for AI training under enforceable terms while keeping control of the assets. As copyright disputes reshape how AI companies access training data, that could give data owners a way to share in the value their data creates.

The signal: Investors are betting privacy becomes the gating factor for enterprise AI adoption. "Every advance in hardware and models only matters if customers are comfortable putting their most sensitive data into AI," said Matt Immerso, general partner at Blockchange Ventures, who expects Cipher to become "a core pillar of the AI data economy." Enigmata Cipher is now available to selected enterprise design partners.
