Shopify acquires Tailwind Labs, maker of the web's top CSS framework
What's the deal? Shopify is acquiring Tailwind LabsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the Canadian company behind the free, open-source web development framework Tailwind CSS. The Ottawa-based e-commerce giant will bring Tailwind's team in-house. Financial terms were not disclosed.
What each does: Founded in 2017, Tailwind built a utility-first framework that helps developers quickly style websites. A 2025 State of CSS Survey found Tailwind CSS was the most popular such framework, used by 51% of respondents.
Why Shopify? Shopify was among the first large companies to build with Tailwind CSS, both internally and for clients. Founder and chief executive officer Adam Wathan called it a “very important part” of Shopify's tech stack.
What's the endgame? The sale gives Tailwind “a stable, long-term home where it will be actively maintained for the millions of people who depend on it,” Wathan said, plus a larger surface on which to advance its tech. Tailwind CSS and its other open-source projects will stay MIT-licensed and continue to be maintained by the team with Shopify's support.
The AI squeeze: Tailwind had been facing what DevClass called the “brutal impact” of AI. In January, Wathan revealed that despite “growing faster than it ever has,” revenue was down nearly 80%. AI also led developers to bypass its core marketing channel, driving a 40% drop in documentation traffic — how clients find its paid offerings — since 2023.
The layoffs: To stay sustainable, Tailwind laid off three employees, three quarters of its engineering team. Multiple AI companies have since stepped up to sponsor the framework.
The signal: The deal shows how AI tools are reshaping the economics of open-source infrastructure, pushing widely used but hard-to-monetise projects toward larger corporate backers for survival. Tailwind CSS is installed over 110 million times per week and styles products including ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit, and Shopify.
