What's the endgame? KVector is commercialising a patented antenna that aims to match the performance of a modern active electronically steered array (AESA) without the electronics that make those systems heavy, costly, and power-hungry. Today's AESAs steer a beam using thousands of individually controlled components; KVector replaces that stack with engineered metamaterial surfaces in a simple electro-mechanical design.

The result, it says, improves RF transmission efficiency while cutting power draw, weight, and complexity. The antenna can be tuned across a wide range of frequencies and is designed for scale manufacturing through UK and European supply chains.

Who's building it? The company was founded by executive chair Henry Nurser, former chief executive of mmWave firm Blu Wireless, alongside the University of Birmingham researchers who invented the technology: Dr James Churm and Professor Alexandros Feresidis. KVector is operating in stealth, working with selected partners in the radar and satellite communications sectors.

What's the money for? The funds will go towards recruitment and a range of radar and communications products, built with the company's existing defence-sector partners. "This investment lets us accelerate development, deepen the work already under way, and build the foundations for a world-class company here in the UK," Nurser said.

Why now? Investors point to a strategic upside beyond performance: the removal of a national vulnerability in the electronics supply chain, since the metamaterial approach sidesteps the component-heavy electronics of conventional systems.

The signal: The £3.8 million is a sizeable seed for a deep-tech company, ranking above the 91st percentile among UK deep-tech seed rounds on record. It reflects growing appetite for defence and communications hardware rooted in domestic manufacturing and university research.
