Try Dealroom →, CDH Hong Kong, and state-owned investment platforms from Chongqing and Jiangsu also participated.
What's the endgame? Starksemi develops 8-inch GaN-on-Silicon Micro LED technology under an integrated device manufacturer model, spanning GaN epitaxy, chip fabrication, and wafer bonding. It argues the 8-inch silicon-based approach taps existing semiconductor foundry ecosystems to scale Micro LED production beyond traditional 4-inch sapphire processes.
Why now? In September 2025, the company completed an 8-inch pilot production line with a planned annual capacity of around 12,000 wafers. It has reached mass production for monochromatic Micro LED chips and is now planning and building a 12-inch line.
The state of play: Full-colour integration remains a key hurdle for commercialising Micro LED. Starksemi is pursuing dual technical routes for red light — AlGaInP and InGaN — and released a full series of RGB Micro LED micro-displays in May last year.
Beyond displays: The company is extending Micro LED into AI data centre optical interconnects, with samples supplied to industry partners for validation and testing.
A busy year: This is one of several raises for Starksemi in 2026. Earlier rounds drew backing from Liangjiang CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Cumulative funding has now passed 2.5 billion CNY.
The signal: CATL's involvement signals interest from outside the display industry in Micro LED's manufacturing potential, while the string of state-backed and strategic investors underscores China's push to build domestic capacity in a technology still fighting for commercial scale.
