What's the endgame? Led by chief executive officer Shishir Bankapur, Helogen builds automated laboratory hardware and robotic equipment to operate in microgravity. Its remote-controlled bioreactors and crystallization chambers sit inside orbiting satellite modules, using the weightless environment to synthesize advanced biomaterials for medical implants.
How it works: The cloud-linked system manages real-time environmental telemetry to automate cell cultivation and material synthesis. Helogen says this lets biopharma companies and academic teams design implants with near-perfect molecular structures and purity that are impossible to replicate in labs on Earth.
Where the money goes: Helogen will fund the mechanical scaling of its fabrication hardware, expand its aerospace engineering and molecular biology teams, and accelerate customer-funded biological research programs.
The signal: At $7.1 million, Helogen's seed sits in the top 5% of all US nanotech seed rounds on record — a sign of investor appetite for the emerging intersection of space infrastructure and biotech, where microgravity manufacturing promises materials terrestrial labs cannot match.
